Lukovo

The village of Lukovo is huddled in southwestern Bulgaria, 11 km away from the town of Svoge and 20 km from the Bulgarian capital – Sofia.
The village of Lukovo belongs to Svoge municipality, Sofia region.
The population of Svoge municipality is 24 000 inhabitants. The municipality includes one town – Svoge, which is the administrative centre of the municipality, with population 8 789 people and 15 communes with population over 2500 inhabitants.
The Svoge municipality is a region with rough mountain terrain. The biggest river passing through the municipality’s lands is Iskar. Other big rivers, which flows into Iskar River are: Iskretska, Skaklya, Proboinitsa, Leskovska, Gradeshnitsa, Batuliiska, Garovnitsa.
Some of the natural landmarks here are the enchanting Iskar defiles, ‘Grohoten’ top (1045 m. above the sea level).
The region is suitable for climbing, hunting, cave tourism.
‘Lakatnishkite rocks’ are unique rock phenomenon with vertical face at the left slope of the Iskar defiles. For centuries the Iskar River has been moulding a fantastic world of rock formations. The 250 – meters – high rocks are related to the beginning of Bulgarian alpinism. At the foot of the rocks is located the longest in Stara Planina Mountain cave – ‘The dark hole’. The sweeping spring ‘Jitoliub’ attracts the passer-by through the main road Sofia – Svoge – Varna.
The Svoge municipality is a traditional territory of the mass tourism. There are tourists’ chalets and a few tourist routes.
The region is a heaven for hunting lovers, as the area is full of wild boars, European roes, and predators. The municipality is famous for 80 archaeological and historical monuments, monasteries and many others, from which the most visited is ‘Sedemte prestola’ monastery. It is located in one of the beautiful places of Gabrovitsa River valley, in the picturesque mountain, under Izdremets top. In the past it was visited mainly by worshippers, today it is a beauty spot for summer and winter holiday.
The Svoge municipality is a traditional area for recreation and relaxation.
